I remember starting this book

I wished I was further along,

The prelude sounded beautiful

Like the hook of your favorite song,

The first few chapters were safe

They quickly set the scene,

The pages were crisp

Not worn in the slightest it seemed,

A chapter of friends in slow cars

Driven like they were fast,

Pages so silly and new

But boy were they a blast,

A chapter on affection

That would quickly betray,

A few pages looked damaged

About a hospital stay,

Then a chapter on healing

A slow redemption arc,

Apathy turned into focus

The contrast was stark,

Back on his feet again

The protagonist found forever,

Rings were exchanged that day

To leave each other, never,

A cliff over crashing waves

The decision was set,

No tiptoeing into the water

Head first was the bet,

Some pages had petals

Tucked into the spine,

Others were hard to read

Ink smudged between the lines,

Some pages were warped

The end of forever came,

Too many pages spent

Trying to identify the blame,

I keep turning the pages

But the numbers disappear,

The author hasn’t finished

How it will end, I fear
